Teaching as a Profession

Why does the teaching profession matter?

Everyday in the classroom I seek to teach with integrity, curiosity and  courage to facilitate critical thinking. I want to engage minds to listen, question, and take risks. I desire my students are challenged and cultivate dreams. For me, the classroom is a place of learning every day and I teach because I want to learn.

In this blog I  want to share a few resources that I found interesting and also present my personal take on  why teaching matters--and it does everyday.

I had the pleasure this week to welcome a team of  teachers from Berlin to  Bancroft. It was a joy to communicate again in German  however what was most enjoyable was to  see a cultural exchange to support teachers. Due to the nature of this profession, expanding one's viewpoint to a worldview is vital--especially in our world today. In 2011 I was a  Fulbright teaching assistant in a small German town near Frankfurt.  This week I learned of the Checkpoint Charlie exchange for both German and American teachers to  tour and explore   respective cross-cultural schools.

As I have spent time participating in both German and American public schools I have noticed the  differences and similarities  of how the profession of teaching is valued. In Germany teaching was is a very honorable occupation; while  I (and my community) hold the same beliefs here,   opinions and infographics posted online paint a different story.

The story that I wish to write about the teaching profession in the United States is one of valuing the critical elements of good teaching.  The profession in education demands commitment for student's learning, leadership in learning communities, continuing in life-long learning, and best practices and knowledge. The profession is meant to masterfully deliver knowledge in an effective and engaging way.

In seeing this model what occurs to me is the importance of being a life-long learner.  I have seen that teachers who develop themselves, remain curious and love teaching teach children who love learning.  This notion extends across languages, across cultures.

There are many characteristics about the profession of teaching, and as I grow in this field I intend to bring a prolonged commitment to community, families and students. Conferences were some of my favorite memories thus far this year due to the nature of really connecting with a vital dimension of student's lives.

Bringing in my authentic teaching voice and style, I also wish to bridge my knowledge of Holistic Health (Graduate student at St. Catherine University for Holistic Health and  IIN certified Integrative Health  Coach) for my student's community. As a professional teacher and coach,  I seek to provide  effective, empowering education to guide people for happy, healthy lives. Finally in consideration of this subject, I wanted to share  what I presented for my first workshop as a Integrative Health Coach.
